About Mount Jackson
Mount Jackson is a vast and sparsely populated locality in the Shire of Yilgarn in the Western Australian goldfields, encompassing a massive 6,329 square kilometres of outback terrain north-east of Southern Cross. The area takes its name from a prominent 617-metre hill first identified by explorer Augustus Gregory in August 1846 and later the scene of gold and iron ore discoveries. With a 2021 Census population of 124 residents, the locality's population is almost entirely connected to resource extraction activities, particularly iron ore mining that has operated in the area since the early 2000s.
The Mount Jackson locality is dominated by the iron ore mining operations that extract ore from two open pits and truck it to Koolyanobbing, approximately 67 kilometres to the south-south-east, for rail transport to the port of Esperance. The surrounding landscape is classic Yilgarn outback — red earth, scrubby mallee, and ancient exposed granite — with the Southern Cross townsite, about 110 kilometres to the south-south-west, being the nearest centre for services. The locality has no permanent residential township and offers the rugged, remote conditions typical of Australia's mining hinterland.
Mount Jackson falls under postcode 6426 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Central Wheatbelt (Agricultural) electorate.
