About Mount Magnet
Mount Magnet is a remote outback town in Western Australia's Mid West region, situated approximately 573 kilometres north-east of Perth and 341 kilometres east of Geraldton, within the Shire of Mount Magnet. With a population of around 583, the town covers an expansive 261 square kilometres at an elevation of 426 metres above sea level. Mount Magnet holds the distinction of being the longest continuously operating gold mining settlement in Western Australia, with a history stretching back to the gold rush era of the late 19th century.
Today the town continues to support active gold mining operations, making it a service hub for mine workers and their families alongside a small permanent community. Facilities include a caravan park, hotel, community swimming pool, medical centre, and basic retail services catering to the local population and passing travellers on the Great Northern Highway. The remote landscape of red earth, mulga scrub, and open skies gives Mount Magnet a rugged outback character, and the area is popular with prospectors, travellers on the Midwest highway network, and those drawn to its frontier history.
Mount Magnet falls under postcode 6638 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the North West Central (Mining and Pastoral) electorate.
