About Mount Mulgrave
Mount Mulgrave is an extremely remote outback locality in the Shire of Mareeba in Far North Queensland, situated approximately 323 kilometres north-west of Cairns and deep in the Cape York Peninsula hinterland. With only 11 residents recorded in the 2021 census across an area of more than 1,400 square kilometres, it is one of the most isolated and sparsely populated localities in Australia. The locality is named after the historic Mount Mulgrave Station and lies in the Palmer River district, a region with a rich history of gold rush activity in the 19th century.
Life in Mount Mulgrave is defined by its remoteness and the rugged beauty of the Cape York hinterland, with vast cattle station properties occupying the surrounding landscape. The region's ecosystem encompasses tropical savanna woodlands, river systems, and diverse wildlife typical of Far North Queensland. There are no urban services within the locality itself; the nearest centres of any size are Mareeba and Cairns, which require significant travel across often unsealed outback roads, particularly during the wet season when some routes become impassable.
Mount Mulgrave falls under postcode 4892 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Traeger electorate.
