About Mount Ossa
Mount Ossa is a rural locality and coastal area in the Mackay Region, Queensland, situated approximately 47 kilometres north-west of Mackay and 30 kilometres north of Mirani. Spanning over 111 square kilometres, the locality takes its name from Mount Ossa (270 metres), a peak that dominates the mountainous south-western portion of the area. With a population of 250 according to the 2021 Census, Mount Ossa is a sparsely settled locality within the Mackay Regional Council area.
The northern and central parts of the locality consist of low-lying, well-watered land suited to sugarcane cultivation, while the coastal fringe borders the Coral Sea to the north. Cattle grazing is common on the hillier terrain, giving the locality a mix of small-scale agriculture and natural coastal hinterland character. Residents are largely self-sufficient, with the city of Mackay providing access to schools, hospitals, and retail services within an hour's drive.
Mount Ossa falls under postcode 4741 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Whitsunday electorate.
