About Mount Pelion
Mount Pelion is a rural locality in the Mackay Region of Central Queensland, located approximately 45 kilometres south-west of Mackay and in the vicinity of the Pioneer Valley. The locality takes its name from the peak of Mount Pelion, which rises to 381 metres above sea level in the south-east of the locality — named by surveyor William Charles Borlase Wilson after the Greek mythological Mount Pelion. Covering around 61 square kilometres, the 2021 census recorded a population of 90 residents. The area falls within the Mackay Regional Council local government area.
The land in the north of the locality is predominantly used for growing sugarcane, with cane tramways historically transporting harvested cane to local sugar mills — a defining feature of the broader Mackay region economy. Mount Pelion has an abandoned railway station on the North Coast railway line in the east of the locality, reflecting its past connections to the Queensland rail network. The town of Mirani, approximately 27 kilometres away, serves as the nearest service centre for groceries and community facilities, while Mackay provides the full range of regional services including hospitals, schools, and retail. Residents require a private vehicle for all daily needs.
Mount Pelion falls under postcode 4741 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Whitsunday electorate.
