About Mount Roland
Mount Roland is a rural locality and conservation area in north-west Tasmania, centred on the iconic dolerite peak of the same name that rises dramatically to 1,234 metres above sea level. Located near the mural town of Sheffield, the locality straddles the local government areas of Meander Valley and Kentish councils. The landscape is dominated by towering dolerite columns, alpine button-grass plains and cool temperate rainforest, making it one of the most photographed natural landmarks in the state. The resident population is very small, with the area known far more for its hiking trails than its township.
Mount Roland draws bushwalkers from across Australia who tackle the well-marked trails from Claude Road and Gowrie Park to the dramatic summit plateau. Sheffield, just a short drive away, provides all essential services including cafes, accommodation, supermarkets and the famous town murals. The locality benefits from the clean cool air, rich farming soils in the foothills and a strong community of hobby farmers and conservation-minded landowners. Proposals for a cable car up Mount Roland have been discussed for decades, reflecting the peak's tourism potential.
Mount Roland falls under postcode 7306 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Montgomery) electorate.
