About Mount Schank
Mount Schank is a rural locality in South Australia's Limestone Coast region, situated approximately 14 kilometres south of Mount Gambier and 385 kilometres south-east of Adelaide within the District Council of Grant. The locality takes its name from the dormant volcanic cone of Mount Schank, a State Heritage Area that dominates the landscape. With a population of around 264 residents spread across approximately 150 square kilometres, Mount Schank is sparsely settled agricultural country. Median household incomes are modest, reflecting the rural and semi-retired demographic typical of the Limestone Coast hinterland.
The main draw of the locality is the extinct Mount Schank volcano itself — a well-preserved ash cone with a walking trail to the crater rim that offers sweeping views across the region. Nearby, the Little Blue Lake is a popular swimming spot, a naturally occurring water-filled sinkhole on the western side of Riddoch Highway known for its striking blue waters. The locality is framed by productive farmland, with grazing and cropping characteristic of the District Council of Grant area. Mount Gambier provides all essential services and is a short drive north along the Riddoch Highway.
Mount Schank falls under postcode 5291 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mount Gambier electorate.
