About Mount Stuart
Mount Stuart is a largely uninhabited locality in the City of Townsville, north Queensland, centred on the prominent 584-metre peak of Mount Stuart which overlooks Townsville to the east. The 2021 Census recorded a population of just 95 people across a large area of 70 square kilometres. Much of the locality is occupied by Lavarack Barracks, one of Australia's largest Army bases, which explains the heavily skewed gender ratio in census data.
The mountain itself is a well-known Townsville landmark used for television and communications transmission, and it serves as a popular destination for trail running, mountain biking, and rock climbing. Lavarack Barracks, built at the foot of Mount Stuart in the 1960s, is home to the Army's 3rd Brigade and 11th Brigade. The locality is approximately 9 kilometres south-west of the Townsville CBD and is accessed via the Stuart and Ingham roads. While there are no shops or civilian services within the locality, Townsville's full range of amenities is a short drive away.
Mount Stuart falls under postcode 4811 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Townsville electorate.
