About Mourilyan
Mourilyan is a small rural town and locality in Far North Queensland, located in the Cassowary Coast Region approximately 7.8 kilometres south of Innisfail and 95 kilometres south of Cairns. With a population of 509 recorded in the 2021 Census, the town grew up around the Mourilyan sugar mill, which was once the major employer in the district. The mill was severely damaged by Cyclone Larry in 2006, dealing a significant blow to the local economy. The surrounding landscape is characterised by sugarcane fields, tropical rainforest remnants, and proximity to the Coral Sea.
Mourilyan retains the character of a quiet sugarcane community, with a close-knit population and strong ties to the region's agricultural heritage. The nearby Mourilyan Harbour, situated about 4 kilometres to the east, serves as a bulk sugar export terminal and is one of the few deep-water ports on the Far North Queensland coast. Residents typically travel to Innisfail for major shopping, schools, and services. The area's tropical climate, affordability, and rural lifestyle appeal to those seeking a slower pace in the Far North Queensland hinterland.
Mourilyan falls under postcode 4858 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hill electorate.
