About Mungallala
Mungallala is a small rural locality and township in the Maranoa Region of South West Queensland, situated on the Warrego Highway approximately 608 kilometres west of Brisbane, 133 kilometres west of Roma, and 45 kilometres west of Mitchell. The locality covers around 451 square kilometres of semi-arid grazing country, and is administered by the Maranoa Regional Council. With a 2021 Census population of 85 residents, Mungallala is a quiet outback community that originated as a railway town on the Western railway line and retains a strong pastoral identity.
The Warrego Highway and the Western railway line run roughly parallel through the locality, connecting Mungallala to the regional centres of Roma and Charleville. The township has a Mungallala railway station approximately one kilometre south-west of town, though regular passenger services are limited. Land use across the locality is dominated by grazing on native vegetation, particularly beef cattle production typical of South West Queensland's extensive pastoral industry. Mungallala appeals to those suited to remote outback living, with Mitchell being the nearest town with health, education, and commercial services.
Mungallala falls under postcode 4467 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warrego electorate.
