About Mungallala South
Mungallala South is a vast outback locality in south-western Queensland, covering approximately 2,367 square kilometres of open grassland and mulga scrub. With a recorded population of just 38 people in the 2021 Census, it is one of Queensland's most sparsely settled areas, situated within the state electorate of Warrego and federal electorate of Maranoa. The locality lies west of Roma in the Maranoa region, a landscape defined by wide horizons, red soil, and the challenges and rewards of life in the Australian outback. Cattle grazing on large pastoral properties is the primary land use across this expansive district.
Life in Mungallala South is quintessentially outback Australian — self-reliant, community-spirited, and deeply connected to the land. Residents are predominantly pastoralists and their families, who manage large cattle and sheep properties across this sparsely populated district. The nearest substantial services, including schools and hospitals, are found in Roma, roughly 90 kilometres to the east. The region experiences a semi-arid climate with hot summers and mild winters, and is occasionally affected by drought, which is a defining feature of the outback Queensland experience.
Mungallala South falls under postcode 4467 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warrego electorate.
