About Mungindi
Mungindi is a remote border locality in south-west Queensland, straddling the Queensland–New South Wales state line on the Barwon River, approximately 511 kilometres west-south-west of Brisbane and 133 kilometres south of St George. The Queensland portion of Mungindi falls within the Goondiwindi Region and Balonne Shire, spanning an exceptionally large area of over 1,000 square kilometres of flat, semi-arid pastoral and agricultural land. The community is small and tightly knit, with a combined population of around 600 across both the Queensland and New South Wales sides of the town.
The local economy is driven by broadacre cropping — particularly cotton, wheat, and sorghum — as well as sheep and cattle grazing, which dominate the vast plains surrounding the town. The Barwon River provides an important water source and recreational drawcard, popular for fishing and camping. Mungindi has the essential services of a small outback town, including a school, medical facility, and general store, with residents of the QLD side travelling to Goondiwindi (about 170 km north) or Moree in NSW for broader shopping and healthcare.
Mungindi falls under postcode 4497 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA).
