About Thallon
Thallon is a remote rural town and locality in the Balonne Shire of south-west Queensland, situated approximately 620 kilometres west of Brisbane and around 200 kilometres south-west of St George. The locality covers an extraordinary 2,094 square kilometres of open Queensland outback, with a population of 231 recorded in the 2021 Census — down from 257 in 2016, consistent with population pressures on remote outback communities. Thallon stands on the site of the former Bullarmon pastoral station, one of the vast grazing empires that shaped the region during the 19th century.
The town is a gateway to outback Queensland history, with the 'Roads of Yesterday' self-drive heritage tour and an 'Old Town' walking trail bringing to life the area's pastoral past. The Francis Hotel provides accommodation, meals, and a general store, making it a practical stopping point for travellers exploring the south-west Queensland outback. The region is characterised by sweeping open plains, a wide sky, and a genuine remoteness that appeals to outback enthusiasts and grey nomads.
Thallon falls under postcode 4497 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warrego electorate.
