About Mystery Bay
Mystery Bay is a small coastal hamlet on the New South Wales South Coast, located approximately 15 kilometres south of Narooma within the Eurobodalla Council area, around 350 kilometres south of Sydney. With a 2021 Census population of 199, the community is largely made up of permanent residents and holiday homeowners drawn to its secluded, unspoilt setting. The locality covers just 3.4 square kilometres and sits just two kilometres off the Princes Highway on Mystery Bay Road, tucked between Central Tilba and Narooma.
Mystery Bay is celebrated for its dramatic coastal scenery — rock pools, sea caves, and broad sandy beaches framed by the southern reaches of Eurobodalla National Park. A popular camping area within the national park makes it a favourite destination for visitors exploring the Sapphire Coast. The lookout at Mystery Bay offers sweeping views over the Pacific Ocean and is a well-known whale-watching spot during the annual migration season. The combination of natural beauty, minimal development, and quiet community feel makes it one of the most scenic localities on the South Coast.
Mystery Bay falls under postcode 2546 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Monaro electorate.
