About Nariel Valley
Nariel Valley is a remote rural locality in the Towong Shire in north-east Victoria, spread across a large catchment of approximately 1,215 square kilometres in the upper reaches of the Murray River region. The valley sits roughly 12 kilometres south-west of Corryong — the largest township in Towong Shire — and is one of the most easterly localities in Victoria, close to the NSW border. The 2021 Census recorded 87 residents in Nariel Valley, reflecting its character as a sparsely settled, mountainous pastoral landscape.
Nariel Valley is best known as the home of the Nariel Creek Folk Festival, one of Australia's longest-running folk music events, held annually at the Nariel Creek Recreation Reserve over the Christmas–New Year period. The festival, which began in 1962 and traces its roots to more than a century of traditional bush music and dance in the valley, draws visitors from across the country to its remote, creek-side setting. The broader valley, framed by the high country of the Snowy Mountains foothills, offers exceptional bush walking, fishing, and quiet pastoral landscapes, with Corryong providing services and the renowned Man from Snowy River Bush Festival each April.
Nariel Valley falls under postcode 3705 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Benambra (Northern Victoria) electorate.
