About Narrung
Narrung is a small locality in the Murray and Mallee region of South Australia, approximately 145 kilometres south-east of Adelaide and 73 kilometres south of Murray Bridge, within the Coorong District Council area. Situated on the Narrung Peninsula between Lake Alexandrina and Lake Albert — part of the Ramsar-listed Coorong wetlands system — the area sits on the traditional lands of the Ngarrindjeri people. With a 2021 population of 183 residents and around 55 per cent of dwellings classified as social housing, Narrung is a small, close-knit community with a significant Indigenous presence and deep connections to Country.
The locality's setting on the interconnected lake system gives it a distinctive character — flat, waterside country with abundant birdlife, fishing, and access to the broader Coorong National Park and Murray Mouth environment. The surrounding lakes and wetlands are among the most ecologically significant in Australia, supporting migratory waterbirds and diverse aquatic species. Everyday services require travel to Meningie or further afield, and residents rely on private vehicles; the quiet, nature-rich landscape appeals to those drawn to lakeside rural living and the unique cultural heritage of this region.
Narrung falls under postcode 5259 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mackillop electorate.
