About Wellington East
Wellington East is a riverside locality in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia, situated on the eastern bank of the Murray River at the point where it opens into Lake Alexandrina — the largest of the Murray-Darling terminal lakes. Located within the Rural City of Murray Bridge, the locality covers approximately 59 square kilometres and had a population of 291 at the 2021 Census, a significant increase from 169 in 2016. The area retains a quiet, semi-rural character with low housing density spread across a wide landscape of floodplains and wetlands.
The locality is prized for its access to the Murray River and Lake Alexandrina, attracting recreational fishers, kayakers, and birdwatchers who make use of the surrounding wetland environments. The nearby township of Wellington on the opposite bank provides essential services and is connected via the Wellington Ferry — one of South Australia's few remaining free vehicle ferries. Residents rely primarily on private vehicle transport, with Murray Bridge (approximately 30 km north) serving as the main service hub for shopping, healthcare, and education.
Wellington East falls under postcode 5259 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mackillop electorate.
