About Navarre
Navarre is a small historic town in the Wimmera region of western Victoria, approximately 227 kilometres north-west of Melbourne. Straddling the boundary of the Northern Grampians and Pyrenees Shires, the town was surveyed in 1855 and named after the medieval Kingdom of Navarre in the Spanish Pyrenees. With a 2021 Census population of 99 residents across nearly 108 square kilometres, Navarre remains a quiet farming community with deep goldfields-era heritage.
The township is centred around its co-operative general store, public hall, and primary school, which together form the social heart of the community. The surrounding country is devoted to broadacre cropping and sheep grazing, and the nearby Pyrenees Ranges offer bushwalking and gold-prospecting opportunities. The regional centres of Ararat and Stawell, each about 35 kilometres away, provide comprehensive shopping, health, and education services for residents.
Navarre falls under postcode 3384 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ripon (Western Victoria) electorate.
