About Newborough

Newborough is a town in the Latrobe Valley region of Victoria, situated about 137 kilometres east of Melbourne and immediately adjacent to Moe, sharing a border along Narracan Creek. With a population of approximately 6,886 at the 2021 census, it was largely developed by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria in the 1950s to house workers at the nearby Yallourn coal mining and power generation operations. The suburb consists of three distinct areas — Old Newborough, East Newborough and North Newborough — each with a slightly different character and era of development. Today, Newborough has a higher-than-average proportion of retirees reflecting its origins as a planned workers' settlement.

Newborough offers a quiet, community-focused lifestyle typical of the Latrobe Valley, with affordable housing, established parks, and proximity to Moe's shops and services. Residents enjoy easy access to the Boolarra Avenue local shopping strip and a range of community facilities. The Latrobe Valley's outdoor environment — including the Strzelecki Ranges and nearby lakes — provides recreational opportunities. The suburb appeals strongly to retirees and families seeking affordable living within a commutable distance of larger regional centres like Traralgon and Morwell.

Newborough falls under postcode 3825 and is governed by Latrobe Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Morwell (Eastern Victoria) electorate.
