About Nitmiluk
Nitmiluk is a locality in the Katherine region of the Northern Territory, named after the famous Nitmiluk National Park and the spectacular 13-gorge canyon system carved by the Katherine River. Located approximately 30 km north-east of Katherine and 340 km south of Darwin, the area is the traditional country of the Jawoyn people, whose name for the gorge means "place of the cicada dreaming." The locality encompasses the national park visitor centre and some of Australia's most dramatic sandstone escarpment scenery.
Nitmiluk draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually to experience the iconic gorge by canoe, cruise boat and helicopter, alongside extensive walking tracks ranging from short strolls to multi-day wilderness hikes. The area is rich in biodiversity, including freshwater crocodiles, black-footed rock wallabies and diverse birdlife. Katherine township provides accommodation, shopping and services for visitors and the small resident population associated with park operations.
