About North Bruny
North Bruny is a rural locality on the northern end of Bruny Island, within the Kingborough Council area of Tasmania's Hobart region. The island is accessed by a short vehicle ferry from Kettering, approximately 35 kilometres south of Hobart, making North Bruny one of Tasmania's more remote inhabited localities. The 2021 Census recorded 122 residents across approximately 86 square kilometres of largely undeveloped coastal and bushland terrain.
Bruny Island is celebrated throughout Tasmania for its spectacular natural scenery, abundant wildlife, and award-winning local produce — particularly cheese, oysters, and honey — and North Bruny benefits from this unspoilt character. The area attracts nature lovers, sea kayakers, birdwatchers, and those seeking a slow, self-sufficient lifestyle removed from urban conveniences. A private vehicle and the Bruny Island Ferry are essential for daily life, and the island's limited infrastructure adds to its appeal as an off-grid haven.
North Bruny falls under postcode 7150 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Franklin (Huon) electorate.
