About Oombulgurri
Oombulgurri is an extremely remote Aboriginal community located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, situated near the mouth of the Forrest River approximately 100 kilometres east of Wyndham. The community covers a vast statistical area of over 12,000 square kilometres and recorded a population of just 27 people in the 2021 Census, making it one of the most sparsely populated localities in Australia. The area falls within the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley and is accessible only by light aircraft or by four-wheel drive during the dry season.
Life in Oombulgurri is deeply connected to Country, with the community maintaining strong ties to the traditional lands of the Ngarinyin and related Kimberley language groups. The landscape is characterised by dramatic sandstone escarpments, tropical savanna woodland, and the Forrest River system. Essential services such as health, education, and food supply are extremely limited in the area, with residents typically relying on Wyndham or Kununurra for major services. The remote location and small population make Oombulgurri one of Australia's most isolated communities.
Oombulgurri falls under postcode 6740 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Kimberley (Mining and Pastoral) electorate.
