About Wyndham
Wyndham is a remote port town and the northernmost settlement in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, located approximately 3,315 kilometres north-north-east of Perth via the Great Northern Highway. Established in 1886 to service the Halls Creek goldfield, Wyndham serves as a port and service centre for the east Kimberley region with a population of 941 residents within the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley. The town has a significant Indigenous population, with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people making up around 54 per cent of the community.
Wyndham experiences a tropical climate with extreme heat — mean maximum temperatures exceed 35°C — and is surrounded by the stunning landscapes of the east Kimberley: the Cambridge Gulf, the King and Ord rivers, and ancient gorge country. The Five Rivers Lookout offers panoramic views over the confluence of the Ord, Forrest, King, Pentecost, and Durack rivers, and is one of the region's most spectacular vantage points. Despite its remoteness, Wyndham draws adventurous travellers and serves the pastoral, mining, and fishing industries of the broader Kimberley.
Wyndham falls under postcode 6740 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Kimberley (Mining and Pastoral) electorate.
