About Paracombe
Paracombe is a small historic locality approximately 24 kilometres north-east of Adelaide's city centre in the foothills of the Adelaide Hills, spanning parts of the Adelaide Hills Council and the City of Tea Tree Gully local government areas. The area takes its name from the Little Para River, whose headwaters rise here, and was first settled in 1840–41 by early colonists, making it one of South Australia's earliest rural settlements. With a population of 435, Paracombe retains a quiet, semi-rural character defined by hobby farms, rural residential properties, and remnant native bushland.
Paracombe is home to the Holy Trinity Church, one of the oldest and most intact examples of a mid-nineteenth century colonial church in South Australia, which remains a heritage-listed landmark and draws visitors interested in the state's early history. The locality is accessed via Gorge Road through Athelstone, offering a scenic approach through the Adelaide Hills foothills. Residents are within reach of Para Wirra Recreation Park for bushwalking and picnicking, while the nearby communities of Houghton and Chain of Ponds offer limited local services; most everyday shopping and amenities are found in Tea Tree Gully or the broader Adelaide metro area.
Paracombe falls under postcode 5132 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Schubert electorate.
