About Peake
Peake is a historic rural township in South Australia’s Murray Mallee region, situated along the Mallee Highway (B12) approximately 150 kilometres east of Adelaide. Within the Southern Mallee District Council area, the locality spans a vast 271 square kilometres of flat mallee scrubland and broadacre farmland. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 104, a decline from 117 in 2016, reflecting the ongoing challenges facing small inland agricultural communities.
Proclaimed as a township in 1907, Peake retains a number of heritage landmarks from its early settlement period, including Polly’s Well (1877), the former Post Office (1912), Station Master’s house (1912), and the Bakehouse and Church (1908), all accessible via a short heritage walk through the town. The Mallee Highway provides the main transport route, connecting Peake to Tailem Bend to the west and Lameroo to the east. There are no public transport services, and residents rely entirely on private vehicles for all travel needs.
Peake falls under postcode 5301 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mackillop electorate.
