About Sherlock
Sherlock is a small rural locality in the Mallee region of South Australia, situated along the Mallee Highway and the historic Pinnaroo railway line within the Coorong District Council area. Covering approximately 308 square kilometres of flat Mallee scrubland and farmland, the locality lies in the south-eastern corner of South Australia, roughly 230 kilometres east of Adelaide. With a 2021 Census population of 70 residents across around 31 dwellings, Sherlock is a quiet farming locality that has remained small since its establishment in the early twentieth century.
Like other communities strung along the Mallee Highway, Sherlock developed as a service point for early farming settlers and the Pinnaroo railway that opened through the area in 1913. The surrounding land is used for broad-acre cereal cropping and sheep grazing, typical of the South Australian Mallee. Residents rely on the nearby town of Pinnaroo for shops, a school, and community services, while the city of Murray Bridge — around 130 kilometres to the west — provides access to a wider range of health and retail services. The locality is best suited to those involved in farming who value the quiet, wide open character of the South Australian Mallee.
Sherlock falls under postcode 5301 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mackillop electorate.
