About Pekina
Pekina is a tiny rural locality in South Australia's mid-north region, nestled between the Pekina Range and Narien Range south of Orroroo in the Flinders Ranges hinterland. With a population of approximately 70 residents as of the 2021 census—down from 172 in 2006—it is one of South Australia's smallest and most remote communities. The surrounding district has a strong pastoral and agricultural heritage, and the area has historically been nicknamed 'Vatican Valley' due to its predominantly Catholic Irish-settler heritage. Pekina sits roughly 315 kilometres north of Adelaide.
Community life in Pekina centres on the historic Pekina Hotel, the only commercial business still operating in the town and a social hub for residents of the surrounding farming district. The economy is driven by dryland farming, wheat, and livestock grazing on the surrounding stations. The region has been affected by drought and rural decline over recent decades, contributing to population loss. Orroroo, about 20 kilometres to the north, provides the nearest schools, medical services, and retail facilities for local residents.
Pekina falls under postcode 5431 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Stuart electorate.
