About Pinwernying
Pinwernying is a small residential locality adjacent to the town of Katanning in Western Australia's Great Southern region, situated approximately 277 kilometres south-east of Perth. Covering just over 5 square kilometres, it is one of the more compact localities in the Shire of Katanning, separated from the Katanning town centre by the Great Southern Railway that forms its western boundary. With a 2021 Census population of 97 residents across 29 dwellings, Pinwernying functions as a quiet residential fringe community on the eastern edge of Katanning.
Pinwernying was gazetted in 1892 and takes its name from Pinwernying Soak, an indigenous Noongar water source that was vital to the early pastoral history of the district. The locality sits at the boundary of the traditional lands of the Koreng and Kaneang peoples of the Noongar nation. A heritage-listed Great Southern Railway Memorial, dating to 1939, is located on the Pinwernying side of the railway line and stands as a reminder of the rail infrastructure that helped open up the Great Southern region. The nearby town of Katanning offers a full range of services including shops, schools, medical facilities, and a weekly saleyards that reflect the district's strong ties to sheep and grain farming.
Pinwernying falls under postcode 6317 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Roe (Agricultural) electorate.
