About Poatina
Poatina is a small township in the Northern Midlands area of Tasmania, situated approximately 60 kilometres south of Launceston and 25 kilometres from Cressy, nestled within the dramatic Western Tiers mountain range at an elevation of around 299 metres. The name Poatina is derived from an indigenous word meaning 'cave'. The township was constructed in the 1960s to house the workforce of the Poatina Power Station, a major Hydro Tasmania hydroelectric facility commissioned in 1964, and its character remains shaped by that heritage.
In 1995, Hydro Tasmania sold the village to Fusion Australia, a not-for-profit Christian youth and community organisation, which has since developed Poatina into a small community-oriented destination. The village offers a chalet and resort-style accommodation, making it a quiet getaway for visitors exploring Tasmania's central highlands. With a small resident population of around 118, life in Poatina is community-focused, surrounded by the spectacular mountain scenery of the Western Tiers and within easy reach of the agricultural plains around Cressy and the Northern Midlands.
Poatina falls under postcode 7302 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (McIntyre) electorate.
