About Port Latta
Port Latta is a tiny industrial locality on the north-west coast of Tasmania, situated approximately 70 kilometres north-west of Burnie and about 30 kilometres east of Smithton. With a residential population of just 16 people (2021 Census), Port Latta is dominated by the Grange Resources iron ore pellet plant and ship-loading port facility, which processes magnetite slurried 83 kilometres via pipeline from the Savage River mine site. The locality covers approximately 2.3 square kilometres on the rugged Bass Strait coastline.
Port Latta's character is almost entirely defined by its industrial role as the export point for Tasmania's iron ore industry, with the Grange Resources pellet plant producing over 2.5 million tonnes of premium iron ore products annually for export to Asian steel markets. The surrounding area features the wild coastal landscape typical of north-west Tasmania, with dense buttongrass plains and wet eucalypt forests inland. The closest towns offering everyday services are Smithton to the west and Burnie to the east, both accessible via the Bass Highway.
Port Latta falls under postcode 7321 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Montgomery) electorate.
