About Rapid Bay
Rapid Bay is a small coastal locality on the southern tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia, situated approximately 100 kilometres south of Adelaide and within the District Council of Yankalilla. The community is tiny — recording fewer than 200 permanent residents — but the locality draws visitors from across the state for its famous pair of jetties, crystal-clear waters, and outstanding marine biodiversity. The surrounding area is characterised by rugged coastal cliffs, sandy beaches, and rolling hills covered in native scrub.
Rapid Bay is renowned as one of South Australia's best dive sites, particularly famous for reliably spotting leafy seadragons — the state's marine emblem — in the wild. The historic long jetty (now replaced by a newer structure) and the surrounding waters attract divers, snorkellers, anglers, and campers throughout the year. Permanent residents enjoy a deeply peaceful, off-the-grid lifestyle, with basic amenities available in nearby Yankalilla, while more extensive services are found in Victor Harbor or Adelaide.
Rapid Bay falls under postcode 5204 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mawson electorate.
