About Robinson River
Robinson River is a small remote Aboriginal community located in the Roper Gulf region of the Northern Territory, approximately 150 kilometres south-east of Borroloola and governed by the Roper Gulf Regional Council. Home to the Garawa people, the community sits on what was historically a working cattle station, with a successful land claim in 1992 returning the land to traditional owners. With a population of around 180 residents, Robinson River is one of the Territory's smaller remote communities, with a high proportion of social housing reflecting the community's remote and essential-service-dependent nature.
The community is served by the Mungoorbada Aboriginal Corporation, which plays a central role in delivering essential services and community programmes. Access to health, education, and essential supplies relies on services provided at the local level, with Borroloola serving as the nearest regional service hub. Robinson River is extremely remote and car-dependent, with no regular public transport connecting it to larger towns; the surrounding landscape of the Roper Gulf region features dramatic savanna woodland and river systems typical of the Top End.
Robinson River falls under postcode 852 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Katherine electorate.
