About Rokewood
Rokewood is a small historic town in Golden Plains Shire, western Victoria, located 133 kilometres west of Melbourne, 44 kilometres south of Ballarat, and 69 kilometres north-west of Geelong. With a population of around 208 residents spread across nearly 187 square kilometres of agricultural land, the township has deep roots in the gold rush era — its post office first opened in October 1857. The area is characterised by open golden plains and mixed farming, typical of this large rural shire.
Rokewood retains the quiet character of a heritage country town, with a general store and a tight-knit farming community at its heart. Residents travel to Geelong, Ballarat, or Colac for major services, shopping, and healthcare, while the town itself offers a peaceful rural lifestyle amid the wide open plains. The Golden Plains Shire is a large agricultural district where sheep, cattle, and cropping are the economic mainstays, and Rokewood serves as a small service point for the surrounding rural properties.
Rokewood falls under postcode 3330 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Eureka (Western Victoria) electorate.
