About Russells Bridge
Russells Bridge is a small rural locality in the Golden Plains Shire of Victoria, situated on the south bank of the Moorabool River approximately 3.5 kilometres north of Bannockburn and around 25 kilometres north-west of Geelong. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 70 residents across the locality, which covers approximately 11.7 square kilometres of undulating farming country in the Moorabool River valley. The area falls within the broader Geelong statistical region and sits between the regional centres of Geelong to the south and Ballarat to the north.
Russells Bridge has a rich colonial heritage — the locality takes its name from George Russell, manager of the Clyde Company, who developed the area from as early as 1838 and directed construction of the first bridge crossing in 1842. The historic bluestone Russells Bridge over the Moorabool River and the remains of the Clyde Flour Mill are listed on the Victorian Heritage Register, reflecting the area's significance in the development of agriculture and the early pastoral industry in the Port Phillip District. Today the locality retains a quiet rural character, with residents accessing services in nearby Bannockburn — which has a P-12 school, shops, and community facilities — and the full range of services available in Geelong.
Russells Bridge falls under postcode 3331 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Geelong (Western Victoria) electorate.
