About Steiglitz
Steiglitz is a small historic locality in central Victoria, situated in the Golden Plains Shire approximately 45 kilometres south-west of Melbourne's western suburbs and about 30 kilometres north-east of Geelong. Once a thriving gold-rush settlement in the 1850s and 1860s, Steiglitz is now a near-ghost town with a population of around 61 residents, and is home to the Steiglitz Historic Park managed by Parks Victoria. The locality preserves significant heritage including the ruins of the courthouse, hotel, and other colonial-era buildings that reflect its prosperous past.
Today, Steiglitz attracts history enthusiasts, bushwalkers, and day-trippers from Geelong and Melbourne who come to explore the historic park and surrounding native bushland. The Moorabool River flows nearby, offering a peaceful natural setting, and the area forms part of the Brisbane Ranges National Park corridor. There are no commercial services in the locality itself; residents and visitors rely on Bannockburn (about 15 km away) for everyday needs. The handful of permanent residents tend to live on rural blocks and value the area's extraordinary heritage character and tranquillity.
Steiglitz falls under postcode 3331 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Geelong (Western Victoria) electorate.
