About Rothsay
Rothsay is a remote rural locality in the Mid West region of Western Australia, situated within the Shire of Perenjori approximately halfway between the towns of Dalwallinu and Mount Magnet, around 400 kilometres north-east of Perth. Covering 3,490 square kilometres of semi-arid wheatbelt and goldfields country, the locality has a 2021 Census population of 197, with a heavily male-dominated demographic (155 men to 38 women) indicative of mining and pastoral station workers. Rothsay has a notable history as a former gold-rush settlement; gold was first discovered here in 1894, and the locality subsequently developed into a small mining town before the ore was exhausted.
Today Rothsay is essentially a ghost town, with most of its historic settlement long abandoned. The surrounding landscape is classic Mid West Western Australia — expansive, flat to gently undulating country with red dirt, sparse vegetation, and the silence of the outback. The locality sits within a broader pastoral and wheat-farming region, and the Rothsay Conservation Park preserves remnant banksia woodland in the area. The nearest towns offering services are Dalwallinu to the south and Morawa to the west, with the regional centre of Geraldton accessible approximately 200 kilometres to the north-west.
Rothsay falls under postcode 6620 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Moore (Agricultural) electorate.
