About Rupanyup
Rupanyup is a small agricultural town in the Wimmera region of north-western Victoria, located within the Shire of Yarriambiack approximately 290 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, 49 kilometres east of Horsham, and 18 kilometres east of Murtoa. With a population of around 545 residents across a vast 414 square kilometre locality, Rupanyup is a traditional service town for surrounding grain and sheep farming properties. The town name is an Aboriginal word meaning 'branch hanging over water', and it was established in 1873 as the region opened to agricultural settlement.
Rupanyup is perhaps best known today for its contribution to the Wimmera's celebrated Silo Art Trail, which has brought colour and visitors to the region's grain silos. The town's main street, Cromie Street, features local services including a hotel, general store, and community facilities, while the surrounding farming landscape defines the rhythm of life. With the old Bolangum railway line long closed (the station operated from 1887 to 1983), a private vehicle is essential. Rupanyup suits those with a deep connection to agricultural communities and the open, flat landscapes of the Victorian Wimmera.
Rupanyup falls under postcode 3388 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ripon (Western Victoria) electorate.
