About Sandilands
Sandilands is a small rural locality on the east coast of the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, situated immediately adjoining Gulf St Vincent approximately 88 kilometres north-west of Adelaide. Covering around 179 square kilometres, the locality falls within the Yorke Peninsula Council and is around 18 kilometres south-east of Maitland, the municipal seat of the council. With a population of 85 at the 2021 Census, Sandilands is a sparsely settled farming district where primary production dominates the landscape.
The locality takes its name from Robert Hamilton Sandilands, a settler who lived in the area during the 1880s, and the name was formally gazetted in 1999. The surrounding region is characteristic of the mid-Yorke Peninsula, with cereal cropping and sheep grazing on broad, gently undulating plains that meet the calm waters of Gulf St Vincent. The nearby town of Maitland provides the closest services, including a supermarket, hospital, schools, and community facilities, while the larger regional hub of Minlaton lies to the south.
Sandilands falls under postcode 5571 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Narungga electorate.
