About South Stradbroke
South Stradbroke is a narrow barrier island — known locally as South Straddie — situated in Moreton Bay off the Gold Coast in south-east Queensland, within the City of Gold Coast local government area. Stretching approximately 21 kilometres in length and just 2.5 kilometres wide, the island covers around 31 square kilometres and had a population of 142 residents at the 2021 Census. Accessible only by boat or water taxi, the island is separated from the Gold Coast's Broadwater by a narrow channel and from North Stradbroke Island by the Jumpinpin Bar inlet.
South Stradbroke Island is best known for its pristine surf beaches on the ocean side, calm Broadwater access on the western shore, and the island resort and eco-tourism experiences it offers. The limited permanent population shares the island with regular day-trippers and resort guests who come for fishing, kayaking, four-wheel driving, and whale watching during the winter migration season. There are no roads connecting to the mainland; residents and visitors access the island by private boat or organised water transport from Runaway Bay or Couran Cove marina.
South Stradbroke falls under postcode 4216 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Broadwater electorate.
