About Southern Cross
Southern Cross is a historic Wheatbelt town in Western Australia's Shire of Yilgarn, situated 371 kilometres east of Perth along the Great Eastern Highway. Founded in 1888 following a gold discovery by prospectors Richard Greaves and Ted Paine, it grew to become the administrative centre of the Shire of Yilgarn, covering an expansive 555 square kilometres of semi-arid goldfields and agricultural land. With a population of around 523 residents, the town retains the character of a classic inland service centre, with wide streets uniquely named after stars and constellations.
Southern Cross sits along the Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail, tracing C.Y. O'Connor's remarkable Goldfields Water Supply Scheme from Mundaring to Kalgoorlie, making it a notable stop for touring travellers. The surrounding Yilgarn region supports extensive wheat farming, with grain silos and agricultural infrastructure part of the town's identity. Residents enjoy essential services including a hospital, schools, and local shops, while the nearby salt lakes and sweeping outback landscapes offer a striking natural backdrop for those who appreciate wide open spaces.
Southern Cross falls under postcode 6426 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Central Wheatbelt (Agricultural) electorate.
