About Speed
Speed is a tiny rural locality in the Mallee district of north-west Victoria, situated approximately 90 kilometres north of Hopetoun and 500 kilometres north-west of Melbourne. With a population of just 53 residents recorded in the 2021 Census, it is one of the smallest localities in the state, spread across roughly 128 square kilometres of flat Mallee country. The locality sits within the federal electorate of Mallee and is characterised by vast dry plains, farming properties and sparse scrubland typical of Victoria's far north-west.
Despite its small size, Speed is best known as the home of the Mallee Machinery Field Days, a major agricultural event first held in 1979 and run annually over two days in August by the local Lions Club. The event draws more than 8,000 visitors to the region, making it a significant drawcard for rural Victoria. The surrounding area is dedicated largely to dryland grain farming, and residents rely on nearby towns such as Hopetoun and Ouyen for shopping, healthcare and essential services.
Speed falls under postcode 3488 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mildura (Northern Victoria) electorate.
