About Lascelles
Lascelles is a small rural locality in the Yarriambiack Shire of north-western Victoria, situated in the heart of the Wimmera-Mallee region approximately 460 kilometres north-west of Melbourne. Covering an expansive 318 square kilometres of flat, open plains, the locality was historically established as a station on the Mildura railway line and named after Edward Harewood Lascelles, an early pastoralist and co-owner of the prominent wool-broking firm Dennys-Lascelles. With a 2021 Census population of just 82 residents, Lascelles is a deeply agricultural community where wheat farming and sheep grazing have defined the landscape and livelihoods for well over a century.
Lascelles is perhaps best known today as one of the stops on the celebrated Silo Art Trail, a 200-kilometre outdoor gallery stretching across Yarriambiack Shire that features large-scale murals painted on heritage grain silos from the 1930s. The GrainCorp silos at Lascelles are among the trail's highlights, drawing visitors from across Australia to this otherwise remote corner of the Mallee. The nearby town of Sea Lake, approximately 21 kilometres away, serves as the closest centre for essential services, while Hopetoun lies around 33 kilometres to the south. Life in Lascelles is quiet and community-spirited, shaped by the rhythms of the farming season and the vast, flat horizons of the Mallee plains.
Lascelles falls under postcode 3487 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mildura (Northern Victoria) electorate.
