About Woomelang
Woomelang is a small rural town in the Mallee region of north-west Victoria, situated approximately 360 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and governed by the Buloke Shire Council. The town serves as a local service point for surrounding farming properties across a vast 228 square kilometre locality. With a 2021 Census population of 191 residents, Woomelang has experienced a gradual population decline over several decades — down from 290 in 1981 — reflecting broader trends of rural depopulation in the Victorian Mallee.
Like most towns in the Mallee region, Woomelang's economy is anchored by dryland agriculture, including cereal grain farming and wool growing. The town is notably home to a distinctive silo art installation at 67 Brook Street, featuring eight field bins (mini silos) painted with murals of endangered species found in the region, including a Mallee Emu-Wren and pygmy possum. The silo art draws visitors to what is otherwise a quiet farming community and adds a touch of cultural vibrancy to this remote outback Victorian township.
Woomelang falls under postcode 3485 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mildura (Northern Victoria) electorate.
