About Spurgeon

Spurgeon is an uninhabited rural locality in the Shire of Douglas in Far North Queensland, located approximately 60 kilometres north-west of Cairns on the Atherton Tablelands fringe. Covering 98 square kilometres, the locality records a population of zero in the 2021 census and is entirely contained within Mount Windsor National Park, part of the UNESCO Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area. The Great Dividing Range forms the western and southern boundary, creating dramatic, rugged terrain covered by tropical rainforest.

Spurgeon's landscape falls within the North East Coast drainage basin and is one of the most ecologically significant localities in Australia, protecting ancient rainforest ecosystems of global importance. The nearest settlements are Lakeland to the north and Mount Carbine to the south, both small outback townships. The area has no permanent residents, no schools, and no facilities, but attracts researchers, wilderness hikers, and ecotourism operators interested in the extraordinary biodiversity of the Wet Tropics. Access is limited to 4WD tracks and unsealed roads through surrounding national park land.

Spurgeon falls under postcode 4871 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Traeger electorate.
