About Stanley
Stanley is a historic coastal town on the north-west coast of Tasmania, situated on a narrow peninsula approximately 379 kilometres north-west of Hobart and 127 kilometres west of Devonport, within the Circular Head Council area. With a population of 595, the town occupies a compact area of around 18 square kilometres and retains much of its 19th-century character. The settlement was established in 1825 as the headquarters of the Van Diemen's Land Company and features well-preserved colonial architecture alongside a working fishing harbour.
Stanley is dominated by The Nut — a spectacular 143-metre volcanic plug that rises abruptly from the isthmus and is the town's defining landmark, accessible by chairlift or walking trail. The town centre offers cafes, galleries, and heritage accommodation, making it a popular stop on the north-west Tasmania touring route. Commercial fishing remains part of the local economy, and the nearby waters of Bass Strait offer excellent seafood, while the surrounding farmland provides a productive rural backdrop.
Stanley falls under postcode 7331 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Braddon (Murchison) electorate.
