About Takone
Takone is a quiet rural locality in the north-west of Tasmania, approximately 28 kilometres south-west of Wynyard within the Waratah-Wynyard local government area. The locality's name is believed to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning "sigh", and it was gazetted in 1966. Covering approximately 44 square kilometres of undulating farmland and bushland, Takone is home to around 80 residents and is characterised by a peaceful, close-knit farming community with the Inglis River flowing through from south-east to north-east, forming part of the northern boundary.
The surrounding countryside is typical of Tasmania's north-west, with rich agricultural soils supporting dairy and mixed farming enterprises set against a backdrop of forested hills. Wynyard, on the Bass Strait coast, provides the nearest range of shops, schools, and services, while Burnie — approximately 40 kilometres to the east — offers a larger regional hub with a hospital, retail and employment opportunities. Takone's rural setting, clean air, and proximity to both coastal and highland landscapes make it appealing to those seeking a self-sufficient lifestyle away from urban centres.
Takone falls under postcode 7325 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Braddon (Murchison) electorate.
