About Talgarno
Talgarno is a small rural locality on the southern shoreline of Lake Hume (Murray River), situated approximately 23 kilometres east of Albury–Wodonga in the Towong Council area of north-eastern Victoria. Covering an extensive 141.8 square kilometres of undulating grazing country, the locality had a 2021 Census population of 245 residents and is one of Victoria's more sparsely populated rural communities. The name derives from the historic Talgarno pastoral station established in 1836, thought to originate from an Aboriginal expression describing dry country.
In the mid-1930s, Talgarno's river flats were permanently inundated by the rising waters of Lake Hume, leaving only the hilly grazing land above the waterline — the Anglican church and the old schoolhouse are visible near the water's edge when the lake is full. The locality retains a small community hall (refurbished in the 1990s), a CFA station, and a cemetery, with a school bus service running to Wodonga for children. Talgarno appeals to those seeking a genuine high country lifestyle on the edge of Lake Hume, with access to fishing, boating, and the scenic landscapes of north-eastern Victoria.
Talgarno falls under postcode 3691 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ovens Valley (Northern Victoria) electorate.
