It lies between the coastal settlements of Mission Beach and Tully, within a globally significant biodiversity hotspot.
The Tam O'Shanter area is best known for its exceptional natural environment, including dense cassowary habitat within the Tam O'Shanter State Forest, which forms part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland UNESCO World Heritage Area. The locality is not serviced by public transport and has no significant residential population, making it a destination for ecotourists and birdwatchers rather than permanent residents.
