About Tanami East
Tanami East is a vast and sparsely populated locality in the Northern Territory's Barkly Region, situated approximately 510 km south of Darwin. Covering an extraordinary 52,842 square kilometres, it is one of Australia's largest statistical areas by land mass, yet recorded only 33 residents in the 2016 census. The locality encompasses part of the Tanami Desert, a remote semi-arid region characterised by spinifex grasslands, sandy plains and seasonal waterholes. It falls within the Barkly Region local government area and the federal electorate of Lingiari.
Life in Tanami East is defined by extreme remoteness and the rhythms of the outback. The area is largely inaccessible by sealed road, and residents depend on four-wheel drive vehicles and light aircraft for transport. The nearest service town is Tennant Creek, roughly 400 km to the east, which provides essential supplies and healthcare. The region holds significance for its Aboriginal cultural heritage, with Warlpiri and other Indigenous communities maintaining a deep connection to the land. Wildlife including feral camels, dingoes and native reptiles roam the vast desert landscape.
