About Tanunda
Tanunda is a historic town situated in the heart of the Barossa Valley, one of Australia's most celebrated wine regions, approximately 69 kilometres north-east of Adelaide in South Australia. Established in 1848 and governed by the Barossa Council, the town has a population of around 4,710 residents as of the 2021 census. Tanunda retains a strong German Lutheran heritage — evidenced in its architecture, church spires, and local traditions — reflecting the heritage of the Silesian settlers who founded the Barossa in the 1840s. The town's name derives from an Aboriginal word believed to mean 'watering hole'.
Tanunda is the commercial and cultural hub of the Barossa Valley, offering a vibrant main street with boutique shops, award-winning restaurants, cellar doors, and the iconic Barossa Farmers Market. The town attracts significant tourism from Adelaide and interstate, drawn by world-class wineries including Penfolds, Wolf Blass, and Jacob's Creek within easy driving distance. Families and retirees are attracted to the relaxed lifestyle, strong community spirit, and excellent local schools. The annual Barossa Vintage Festival and other cultural events keep Tanunda's calendar lively year-round.
Tanunda falls under postcode 5352 and is governed by Barossa Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Schubert electorate.
